Robert Callis (b.1615) was the son of Henrie Callice/Callis of St. Alban, St. Peter's Parish, Hertfordshire, England. His transportation was paid to Northampton County, Virginia, in 1637 and settled in Petsworth Parish, Gloucester County, Virginia.

His son, John Callis, married Martinella Hendryck of Barbados and they settled in Gloucester County, also. They were the parents of five children: Fenwick, Alexander, Ann, Margaret and John Callis.

Several generations of ancestors and descendants are given. Family members lived in Virginia, Kentucky, Washington, Ohio and elsewhere.

Robert Callis “The Immigrant” came to the Virginia Colony in 1637 when his son John was 2 years old. John by age 20 was apparently involved in the Sea Merchant trade, including the sugar trade in Barbados where he was married to Martiline Hendryck on May 8, 1657. He was listed as Captain John Fenwick Callis. They had five children, several of whom were born in Barbados, including John Callis born in August of 1667 according to Church Records. At some point later than 1667 John Sr. and wife Martiline moved their family to Petsworth Parish, Gloucester County, Virginia. Their son John Jr., my 9th G-Grandfather, is, as far as I know, the most southern born ancestor I have. Barbados is an Island in the Caribbean. It is part of the Lesser Antilles of the West Indies and the eastern most island of the Caribbean region. It is just North of the Equator off the coast of South America.

John Jr.’s Great-Granddaughter, Mary Joann Callis, married Arron Hudgins on June 6, 1759 in Gloucester, Mathews Co, VA. Arron and Mary Hudgins are my 6th G-Grandparents.

On July 26, 1766 Arron and Mary, bought 416 acres of land in Lunenburg County, VA for 22 pounds. This land is located in the Stoney Creek watershed, North of the Meherrin River.

This tract is just a few miles from my ancestral home where I currently live.

Mary Callis’ father, James Callis, moved his family from Mathews Co. VA to Lunenburg Co. VA about the same time that Mary and Arron Hudgins came to Lunenburg Co. VA. James’ home is still here in Lunenburg and still occupied at 915 Berry Rd., Brodnax, VA 23920. It is just east of the intersection of Berry Rd. and HWY 138.
